Maske is made to help you keep track of your knitting patterns and the garments you make. We collect as little about you as possible, and we sell nothing on.
In short: You can use the whole app without an account. If you sign in, your patterns and photos sync through your own iCloud — where we can't see them. Titles, counters and notes sync through our database in the EU. If you choose to share a project with friends, they see the photos and details you share — never the pattern. We use no analytics, no tracking and no ads.
Who is responsible
Erlend Hordvei is the data controller for the personal data processed in Maske. You can reach us at ehordvei@gmail.com.
You don't need an account
The whole app works without signing in. Your patterns, projects, photos and counters then stay on your device only, and we receive nothing.
What we store when you sign in
If you sign in with Apple, we store:
- A user ID and an email address from Apple. If you choose “Hide My Email”, we get Apple's relay address — we never see the real one.
- What you type in yourself: titles, designer names, notes, yarn, needles, gauge, sizes, row counters, reminders, deadlines and project details.
- Your yarn stash: the name, colour, dye lot, fibre and amount of the yarn you've added.
- Knitting time: how many rows you've counted and roughly how long you've knitted, per day and pattern. It's worked out from when you count rows, and is only used to show you your own knitting time.
- What you write and draw on your patterns with Apple Pencil or your finger — your strokes, not the pattern underneath.
We do not store your pattern files, the text in them, or the photos of your garments. See the next section.
The chest measurement you enter to find the right size, and your choice of light or dark appearance, stay on your device and are not sent to us.
Your patterns are yours alone
Your PDFs, photographed patterns and garment photos are stored in the private part of your own iCloud, so you have them on your iPad even if you added them on your phone. Apple gives us as the developer no access there — we cannot see, read or download your files, even if we wanted to. The storage counts towards your iCloud space.
The text Maske reads from a pattern to find sizes and gauge is extracted on each device separately and never sent to us. In practice, it is the pattern itself.
If you're not signed in to iCloud, or it's full, the files stay on the device where you added them, and the app tells you.
Maske has no way to share patterns with others, and never will. A pattern belongs to the designer who made it. When you show a garment to your friends, it's the photos of what you knitted that are shared — never the pattern itself.
Friends
Friends is off until you start using it. Then we store:
- The name you choose to show and a random friend code. No one can look you up by name or email — only people you give the code to can send you a request, and no one becomes your friend unless you say yes.
- Who you're friends with, and who you've blocked.
- The projects you choose to share. A shared project shows photos of the garment, its name, status, size, yarn and needles, and the name of the pattern and designer with a link to where it can be bought. The photos are stored in a smaller version with us, without location or camera details, and only your friends can see them. If the project is on the needles, your friends also see roughly how far you've come and how long you've knitted.
- Knit-alongs you start or join: the name, the pattern's name and designer, the dates, who's invited, and for each participant their name and how far they've come. Everyone taking part sees this — including people who aren't your friends, but only the name and the numbers, not your profile or anything else you've shared. Only friends of the person who started it can be invited.
- Cheers and any reports you send. Reports are read only by us.
- A notification token for your device, if you allow notifications. It's used only to tell you when someone wants to be your friend, says yes, cheers or invites you to a knit-along, and is deleted when you sign out.
Your notes, what you did differently, who the garment was for, and the pattern itself are never shared. You can stop sharing a project at any time, and it disappears for your friends straight away.
Purchases
Purchases of Maske Plus are handled by Apple. We don't receive your payment details. The purchase is linked to your user ID so we can help you if something goes wrong.
Text recognition happens on your device
When you add a photographed pattern, the text is read by Apple's built-in text recognition, on your phone. The image is not sent to us or to any third party to be read.
Where the data is stored
We use Supabase as a data
processor for storage and sign-in. The database is in Supabase's
eu-north-1 region in Stockholm, within the EEA.
Files in iCloud are stored by Apple under your agreement with Apple, according to Apple's privacy policy. We are not the controller for them, since we have no access to them.
What we don't do
- We use no analytics and don't measure what you do in the app.
- We use no tracking across apps or websites.
- We show no ads.
- We don't sell or share information about you with anyone.
Your rights
At any time, without contacting us, you can:
- Export everything — Account → Export everything gives you a zip with all your data in an open format that you can open without Maske.
- Delete your account — Account → Delete account removes your account and everything we've stored for good, and the app also deletes the patterns and photos it has placed in your iCloud. What you've stored locally on your phone stays unless you delete the app.
You also have the right of access, rectification and restriction, and the right to complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, Datatilsynet, or the authority where you live. Contact us at the address above and we'll help.
Legal basis
We process the data to provide the service you ask for — that is, to fulfil the agreement between you and us, under Article 6(1)(b) of the GDPR.
How long
We keep the data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, it's deleted straight away.
Children
Maske is not aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information about children under 13.
Changes
If we change this policy, we update the date at the top. If we do something that affects you significantly, we'll tell you in the app.
